Refrigerator water filter replacement
The same refrigerator filter is usually sold in two versions, and only one of them is certified to reduce lead. Waterdrop registers the plain version with NSF under a code beginning WD-, certified under standard 42 for chlorine, taste and odour, and the Waterdrop Plus version under a code beginning WDP-, certified under standards 53 and 401 as well, for lead, cysts, mercury and six pharmaceutical and pesticide claims. Both are accurately advertised as NSF certified.
Across 272 certified Waterdrop refrigerator models listed by NSF on 5 August 2026, 166 hold standard 42 alone. The plain versions outsell the Plus versions by ten to thirty times on owner-rating counts, so the cartridge most people buy is the one certified for better tasting water rather than for anything a health department tests. shape and one socket, and Waterdrop registers three separate cartridges for
it. They are physically interchangeable. They are not certified alike, and
the retail listings look nearly identical.

This is not a complaint about Waterdrop. They publish all
three registrations, the Plus listings say "NSF 401 Certified" on the box,
and the certificates are public. It is a complaint about what the phrase
"NSF certified" carries on a product page, which is nothing at all until you
know the standard. The same reading applies to every other brand in the
category, including the refrigerator manufacturers themselves.
Find your fitting
The code is printed on the cartridge you are replacing, and usually inside
the fridge door. The right column is the string to search in
NSF's own listing,
because databases index by the manufacturer's model number rather than the
retail title.
Not ranked, because a ranking answers the wrong question. You own one
fridge, it takes one cartridge, and the other five on this page are no use
to you. Every one below is the version certified under standards 53 and 401,
and each card names the plain version of the same fitting so you can see
what the difference buys.

Find the model number, not the retail title. It is moulded
into the cartridge or printed on the label. "Replacement for GE MWF" is a
fitment description, not a model number.
Search that string in the certifier's database. NSF's
drinking water treatment unit listing is public and needs no account.
Read the standard, then the claim column. Standard 42 is
chlorine, taste and odour. Standard 53 is where lead, cysts and volatile
organic compounds live. A model can hold one, two or all three.
If the model is not listed, the filter is not certified.
That is common and it is not automatically a problem for a cartridge sold
on price, but it means the packaging claim is the only evidence you have.
When to change it
Every six months, or at the rated volume if you get there first. Most of
these cartridges are rated for 200 to 300 gallons, which a household of four
reaches in roughly six months of drinking and ice. The date is the binding
number for most people rather than the volume, because carbon supports
bacterial growth over time whether or not water is moving through it.
A fridge that lights up a filter warning is counting months or litres
dispensed. It is not measuring your water, and it does not know what
cartridge you fitted.
Common questions
Are aftermarket refrigerator water filters as good as the original?
The question to ask is not who made it but what it is certified to reduce, because that is the part that differs and it is published. NSF lists every certified model by the standard it holds: 42 covers chlorine, taste and odour, 53 covers lead, cysts and volatile organic compounds, and 401 covers pharmaceutical and pesticide residues. Some aftermarket cartridges hold all three. Many hold 42 alone, and so do some original manufacturer filters. Look up the model number rather than the brand.
What does NSF certified mean on a refrigerator water filter?
On its own it means the filter was tested against at least one NSF/ANSI standard, and it does not say which. Standard 42 is an aesthetic standard: chlorine, taste, odour and particulates. Standard 53 is the health effects standard covering lead, cysts and volatile organic compounds. A filter certified under 42 alone is accurately described as NSF certified and is not certified to reduce lead. Of 272 certified Waterdrop refrigerator models listed on 5 August 2026, 166 hold standard 42 alone.
How often should I change a refrigerator water filter?
Every six months, or at the rated volume if you reach it sooner, which is usually 200 to 300 gallons. The date matters more than the volume for most households, because the carbon carries bacteria growth over time whether or not water is running through it. A fridge that tells you to change the filter is counting either months or litres dispensed, not measuring the water.
Does a refrigerator water filter remove lead?
Only if it is certified under NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction, and most are not. The same fitting is often sold in two versions: one certified under standard 42 for chlorine and taste, and one certified under 53 for lead and cysts. Waterdrop labels the second kind "Plus" and registers it with NSF under a model code beginning WDP. Check the model number against NSF's listing before assuming.
Will a generic filter void my refrigerator warranty?
In the United States the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents a manufacturer from voiding a warranty simply because a replacement part was not theirs, unless they supply the part free. What a manufacturer can do is decline a claim for damage the part actually caused, which is a much narrower thing. A cartridge certified to the same NSF standards as the original is difficult to argue caused a failure.
